Frank Hoffmann (born February 23, 1954 in Luxembourg ) is a director and was director of the Ruhr Festival in Recklinghausen until July 31, 2018 .

Career

Frank Hoffmann was born in Luxembourg. From 1979 to 1983 he studied Romance languages, German and philosophy in Luxemburg and Heidelberg, then worked as a research assistant at the University of Heidelberg and took his first steps as assistant director to David Mouchtar-Samorai at the Heidelberg Theater. In 1979 he founded the “Klammerspiele Heidelberg”, with which he staged his first productions in the newly opened Romanisches Keller in Heidelberg. After receiving his doctorate in 1983 in Heidelberg on a philosophy of theater based on Michel Foucault , he accepted a call to the Conservatoire de Luxembourg for a professorship in directing. As a freelance director, he worked in Berlin, Paris, Cologne, Basel and Stockholm, among others. In 1994 he gained a foothold in music theater with Hoffmann's stories . In 1996, Hoffmann founded the Théâtre National du Luxembourg with the help of the Ministry of Culture of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg , which he has headed to this day (2020). In September 2004 he took over the position of artistic director and managing director of the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen from Frank Castorf , which he directed until 2018 and expanded it into one of the largest and most important European theater festivals. He also founded the first European piece market in Luxembourg in 1998 with texts . Frank Hoffmann has brought out well over a hundred national and international productions in more than twenty cities, including Germany, France, Luxembourg, Austria and Switzerland. a. at the Burgtheater Vienna , at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg , at the Paris Théâtre National de la Colline, at the Basler Theater , at the Kölner Schauspiel , at the Schauspiel Bonn , at the Schauspiel Frankfurt , at the Freie Volksbühne Berlin , at the Bremen Theater and in Luxembourg at the Kasematten and at the Capuchin Theater. His productions have made guest appearances on many European stages as well as in Asia and North and South America and have also been invited to the Schiller Days in Mannheim, the Mülheim Theater Days , the Bonn and Wiesbaden Biennials, the Heidelberg Stückemarkt , the Ibsen Festival in Oslo and the Strindberg Festival to Stockholm, to the festivals of Sibiu and Cluj (Romania), to the Culture Month in Plovdiv (Bulgaria), to the Prague German Language Theater Festival, to the Festival of Classical Theater to Almagro (Spain) and to Taipei to the Taiwan International Festival of Arts .
