Alfred Kirchner (born May 22, 1937 in Göppingen ) is a German freelance opera director and theater director in Berlin.

Life

Alfred Kirchner was born the son of an editor.

Kirchner received his training at the Max Reinhardt School for Drama in Berlin . He began as an actor and assistant director in Kiel . From 1964 to 1971 he worked at Kurt Hübner's Theater in Bremen , initially as assistant director to Peter Zadek and Peter Palitzsch .

Alfred Kirchner is married and has two daughters. He lives in Berlin and Stuttgart .

Services

From 1965 Kirchner appeared with his own productions, for example at the Schauspielhaus Bochum with Hans Schalla . From 1972 to 1979 he was senior director at the Staatstheater Stuttgart and from 1974 a member of the board of directors under Claus Peymann . In addition, he gave guest productions at other theaters and festivals, such as in New York, at the Theater of Nations, at the Wiener Festwochen , at the Holland Festival Amsterdam and at the Mülheimer Theatertage . In 1979 he followed with part of the Stuttgart Ensemble Peymann to the Schauspielhaus Bochum, where he was co-director until 1986. In 1986 he followed Peymann to the Burgtheater in Vienna , where the long-term collaboration ended after a short time. 1989 / 90-1993 he took over the management of the Staatliche Schauspielbühnen Berlin with three other directors ("Gang of Four") until it was closed .

Afterwards Kirchner worked as a freelance opera director a. a. at the Frankfurt Opera , the Leipzig Opera, the Vienna State Opera and the Hamburg State Opera . Several times he took part in the Berlin Theatertreffen . He focused on music theater at national and international opera houses, for example in Zurich , Barcelona , Oslo , Moscow , Strasbourg, Montpellier , Toulouse , Oviedo , Dallas , Santiago de Chile and often in Santa Fe . He was represented at the Bayreuth Festival from 1994 to 1998 with the new production of Der Ring des Nibelungen .

He collaborates with the conductors Michael Gielen , Claudio Abbado , Nikolaus Harnoncourt , James Levine , Gerd Albrecht , Paulo Carignani, Graeme Jenkins, Dennis Russell Davis and De Billy. In addition to the classics of drama and music theater, Alfred Kirchner is particularly committed to world premieres by Martin Walser , Peter Turrini , Heiner Müller , Herbert Achternbusch , Dario Fo and Maxim Gorki , Gerlind Reinshagen, Hans Zender and Udo Zimmermann. Kirchner taught at the University of Athens, Georgia, at the Musikhochschule and Universität Hamburg as well as at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin .
