Barbara Frey (director)

Barbara Frey (born April 29, 1963 in Basel ) is a Swiss theater director and general manager.

Life

Barbara Frey's father was a lawyer, her mother a speech therapist. She studied German and philosophy at the University of Zurich . During her student days she played as a drummer in a rock band and wrote song lyrics; Since 1986 she has worked with the percussionist Fritz Hauser again and again. In 1988 she first came to the Basel Theater as a musician with Frank Baumbauer , but after a short time worked there as an assistant director and actress. In 1993 she made her debut there as a director with I can do it especially beautiful after Sylvia Plath's first and only novel Die Glasglocke . Several other projects followed in Basel, before she made guest appearances at various theaters in German-speaking countries from 1995, including the Nationaltheater Mannheim , the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg and various Zurich theaters . She declined the offered directorate of Theater Neumarkt (Zurich).

In 1999 she was hired by the Berlin Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz for two years as a permanent main director, after which she initially worked as a freelance again, particularly in Basel and Munich. According to the long-time feature editor of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Barbara Villiger Heilig, Frey finally achieved “a kind of breakthrough” in 2002 with her staging of Beckett's final at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel . Her uncle Wanja ( Anton Chekhov ) in Munich was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2004 .

For the 2005/2006 season, Frey committed himself to the Deutsches Theater Berlin for two to three pieces a year until 2008 - unlike at the Schaubühne, however, with the option of performing outside engagements during this time. She made use of this by directing at the Salzburg Festival and at the Burgtheater Vienna .

Barbara Frey has been director of the Schauspielhaus Zurich since the 2009/10 season ; she took over the function of Matthias Hartmann , who moved to the Vienna Burgtheater as artistic director. In 2014, the house extended Frey's contract until 2019.

On November 1, 2020, Frey will take over the artistic direction of the Ruhr Triennale , the largest cultural festival in North Rhine-Westphalia, for three years (seasons 2021–2023) .
