Tsutomu Seki

Tsutomu Seki ( Japanese 関 勉 , Seki Tsutomu ; born November 3, 1930 in Kōchi , Kōchi Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese amateur astronomer . He is the director of the Geisei Observatory in Geisei and a member of the Comet Section of the Oriental Astronomical Association .

Seki is actually a trained concert guitarist , but in the course of time he turned more and more to astronomy , especially the search for comets . He has discovered 34 comets so far, including the very bright Ikeya-Seki in 1965 , which was even visible next to the Sun during the day , as well as the comets C / 1961 T1 (Seki) and C / 1967 C1 (Seki) named after him .

In addition, he discovered 224 asteroids , many of which he named after places and attractions in Kōchi Prefecture , such as (2396) Kochi , (2571) Geisei or (2582) Harimaya-Bashi .

The asteroid (3426) Seki was named after him.
