Conor McPherson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Conor McPherson (born August 6, 1971 in Dublin ) is an Irish playwright, screenwriter and director. He studied philosophy in Dublin and belongs to the young Irish writing scene.

While the figureheads of this author scene, Sarah Kane ( greed ) or Mark Ravenhill ( shopping & fucking ), put absolute losers and borderline figures on the stage, McPherson's characters are more of a good-for- nothing who muddle through, rebel against the rut and boredom, on the other hand as well arrange.

McPherson is a co-founder of the Dublin theater group "The Fly by Night Theater Co." which premieres new plays. McPherson staged his first play, Rum and Vodka , at University College Dublin in 1992 . He had initially submitted his piece of salt water (original title The Lime Tree Bower ) to various Irish theaters in vain; then he brought it out himself at the Fringe of the Dublin Festival . In 1996 the London Bush Theater took over Salzwasser to its repertoire with great success and hired McPherson as “Writer in Residence” in the same year. The defense brought him his breakthrough in 1997 at the Royal Court Theater in London and made him known beyond the borders of Ireland and Great Britain; the acclaimed German premiere at the Stuttgart State Theater in May 1998 attracted a lot of attention there. After all, up to eight of his pieces ran on German stages in a single season.

McPherson has received several awards. He filmed his piece of salt water himself. For this he was awarded the CICAE Award for best film at the Berlin Festival 2000. In 2003 he also directed the comedy film The Actors . In 2006, he was for Shining City for the Tony Award nominated. The "London Telegraph" called him " the finest dramatist of his generation ... " because of this piece . 2009 followed with The Eclipse, which was the last film to date as a director. Artemis Fowl (2020) was also involved as a screenwriter .
