Stephen Costello

Stephen Costello (* 1981 in Philadelphia ) is an American singer of the vocal range tenor .

Live and act

Stephen Costello studied at the University of the Arts and the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, where he graduated in 2007. In the same year he made his debut at the season opening of the Metropolitan Opera New York with the opera Lucia di Lammermoor . In 2009 he received the Richard Tucker Award . Since then he has been singing in renowned opera houses around the world such as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden , the Vienna State Opera , the Bavarian State Opera , the Teatro Real Madrid , the Bolshoi Theater Moscow , the Washington National Opera , the Paris Opera , the Hamburg State Opera and the Semper Opera Dresden . He was also a guest at the Salzburg Festival and at festivals in Tanglewood and Glyndebourne, among others .

Costello's repertoire of roles includes roles such as Rodolfo ( La Bohème ), Roméo ( Roméo et Juliette ), Alfredo ( La Traviata ), Lenski ( Eugen Onegin ), Edgardo ( Lucia di Lammermoor ), Nemorino ( L'elisir d'amore ), the singer in Rosenkavalier , the title role in Faust as well as Rossillon in The Merry Widow .

In 2010 Costello coined the role of the greenhorn (or Ishmael ) in the world premiere of the opera Moby-Dick by Jake Heggie at the Dallas Opera . He also played this role in San Francisco and Washington.

In 2019 he could be seen for the first time as Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto on the Bregenz lake stage , the TV recording was released on DVD. For his album "A Te, O Cara" he was also nominated for a Grammy for the first time in 2019 in the category Best Classical Solo Vocal Album .

In 2020 he will appear in Paris as Chevalier des Grieux ( Manon Lescaut ) at the Paris Opera and for the first time as Ferrando in Così fan tutte at the Palais Garnier .
