Folkoperan

The Folkoperan is an opera house in Stockholm , which was founded in 1976 as a counterpart to the Royal Opera there in order to make the opera accessible to a wider public.

The opera house has been located at Hornsgatan number 72 in a former cinema since 1984. There used to be a hall at this place.

history

Claes Fellbom and Kerstin Nerbe worked together for the first time on a Don Carlos production at the Stockholm Opera School. Fellbom was the director of a scene in this opera and Nerbe accompanied the rehearsals as a répétiteur at the piano. The later married couple Fellbom and Nerbe then founded the Folkoperan as a traveling opera company.

From 1980 to 1984 they worked in a small movie theater with space for 170 visitors. In 1984 they swapped this theater for the building on Hornsgatan. There is space for more than 600 people in this old cinema. Although the building was adapted for the Folkoperan, there is no back or side stage, for example.
