Markus Hinterhäuser (born March 30, 1958 in La Spezia , Italy ) is an Austrian pianist and cultural manager . Since 2016 he has been the artistic director of the Salzburg Festival .

Life

Hinterhäuser completed his piano studies at the Vienna Conservatory and the Mozarteum Salzburg . There he was a student of Elisabeth Leonskaja and Oleg Maisenberg, among others . As a chamber musician, he was soon working with the Arditti Quartet . He was also the accompanist of the singer Brigitte Fassbaender for a long time . Later he was particularly committed to the music of the 20th century. Among other things, he recorded the entire solo piano works of the Second Viennese School as well as John Cage , Morton Feldman and Galina Ustwolskaja .

He is also a regular guest at many festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival , the Schubertiade Hohenems , the Munich Piano Summer and the Wien Modern Festival .

Hinterhäuser (with Tomas Zierhofer-Kin ) is the founder and long-time director (1993–2001) of the Zeitfluss Festival (Salzburg Festival) and Zeit-Zone ( Wiener Festwochen , since 2002). In February 2005 - instead of the originally planned Peter Schmidl - he was designated as concert director of the Salzburg Festival by future artistic director Jürgen Flimm and served from 2007 to 2011.

In the 2011 season, Hinterhäuser was - due to the early departure of Jürgen Flimm - interim director of the Salzburg Festival. From 2014 to 2016 he directed the Wiener Festwochen .

Since 2017 he has a five-year contract as artistic director of the Salzburg Festival. In May 2019, his contract was extended for another five years until 2026.
