The Schubertiade Vorarlberg is considered the most important Schubert festival in the world. The name Schubertiade is derived from the evenings with Schubert compositions in private settings during the lifetime of the composer Franz Schubert .

This festival was founded in 1976 in Hohenems as the “Schubertiade Hohenems” by the German baritone Hermann Prey together with the Austrian cultural manager Gerd Nachbauer . Prey wanted to list all of Schubert's works in chronological order according to their origin. After differences of opinion about the design of the festival, Prey withdrew from the management in 1981 and established a series of concerts at the Wiener Musikverein , also known as the “Schubertiade” , which continued the basic chronological idea.

The Vorarlberg Schubertiade initially took place in the Hohenems Palace, from 1991 onwards as the "Schubertiade Feldkirch" in Feldkirch with "Landpartien" in the surrounding area (including Schwarzenberg and Achberg Castle ) and since 2001 has been largely located in Schwarzenberg as the "Schubertiade Schwarzenberg" .

In Schwarzenberg, many of the world's best-known song interpreters, pianists and instrumentalists come together in two summer periods - in recent years and the like. a. Ian Bostridge , Robert Holl , Christian Gerhaher , Matthias Goerne , Christoph Prégardien , Thomas Quasthoff , Michael Schade , Angelika Kirchschlager , Diana Damrau , Juliane Banse , Bernarda Fink , Elisabeth Leonskaja , Oleg Maisenberg , Till Fellner , Alfred Brendel , Graham Johnson , Lars Vogt , Renaud Capuçon , Gautier Capuçon  - as well as chamber music ensembles such as the Alban Berg Quartet , the Hagen Quartet , the Artemis Quartet and the Emerson Quartet . In addition, great interpreters hold masterclasses in lied (including Thomas Quasthoff, Gundula Janowitz , Edith Mathis ) and string quartet, which are also open to the public. The range of programs attracts international music connoisseurs, who often travel for the entire duration of the festival. The main venues are the Angelika Kauffmann Hall, which was expanded in 2001 and is famous for its ideal acoustics, and the smaller village hall.

Since 2005, the organizing Schubertiade GmbH has again offered concerts under the label “Schubertiade Hohenems” in Hohenems, the place where it was founded, which take place at irregular intervals throughout the year. The venue in Hohenems is the former multi-purpose hall of a gymnastics club, which has been converted into the Markus Sittikus Hall .

The Schubertiade also offers its visitors several museums on the themes of Franz Schubert, Das Dreimäderlhaus , Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Walter Legge .
