The Emerson String Quartet (2014)

The Emerson String Quartet , named after the philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson , is one of the world's most important string quartet ensembles . It was founded in 1976 at the Juilliard School in Manhattan . In addition to the classical repertoire, it interprets contemporary works, such as the 1980 world premiere of Mario Davidovsky's 4th String Quartet . Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer take turns at the desk of the Primarius.

The ensemble was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 2004.

  • Paul Watkins, cello (at the end of the 2012/2013 concert season, replaced the cellist David Finckel, who had been a member of the Emerson String Quartet since 1979)
