Edward Barrett

Edward Edmund "Ned" Barrett (born November 3, 1880 in Bullyduff , County Kerry ; † unknown) was a British wrestler , track and field athlete , tug of war and hurler of Irish origin. He was Olympic champion in tug of war and winner of the bronze medal in wrestling in free style in the heavyweight division .

Career

Edward Barrett, a native of Ireland (Ireland was part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland when he was an athlete), was an extremely versatile athlete. He operated wrestling as his main sport, was a track and field athlete, tug of war and started in a hurling team. Hurling is a sport similar to hockey, mainly practiced in Ireland .

In wrestling, Barrett was the British free style heavyweight champion in 1906, 1909 and 1911. In 1908 he won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in London in heavyweight free style after two wins and one loss to his Irish compatriot George Con O'Kelly . He started in London also in Greco-Roman. Stil, retired in the competition with seven wrestlers after the 1st round after a defeat against Hugo Payr from Hungary and was placed in 5th place together with two other wrestlers who had also lost in the 1st round.

Edward Barrett also started wrestling at the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 . Since there were no free-style competitions there, he had to start again in the Greco-Roman style, won a fight against the strong Russian Nikolai Farnest and lost his next fights against the Finn Emil Backenius and the Dane Søren Marinus Jensen . He came in 9th place in the heavyweight division.

Back to the Olympic Games in London in 1908, where Edward Barrett started not only wrestling in the London police team but also in the tug of war. He and his team won the gold medal in front of two other British teams.

Finally, Barrett was in London as a track and field athlete in the three throwing disciplines shot put , discus throw and javelin throw (free technique) at the start. While he remained unplaced in the discus throw and javelin throw, he came to 12.88 m in the shot put and landed in 6th place, only 30 cm behind the winner of the bronze medal.

Edward Barrett's greatest success in hurling was, together with his London team, winning the All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in Cork / Ireland.
