Tug of war at the Olympics
Tug of war was part of the program of the Olympic Games from 1900 to 1920. Tug-of-war is now an independent sport, in the past it was classified as heavy athletics or athletics . The Tug of War International Federation (TWIF),founded in 1960,wasrecognizedby the IOC in 2002.
Competitions
Paris 1900
Only two teams competed in Paris, a French team and a mixed team with Danes and Swedes. Each team consisted of six athletes. A maximum of three rounds were held, whoever won two of them was the winner.
St. Louis 1904
The five teams competed against each other in the knockout system .
Athens 1906
Four teams competed at the interludes in Athens. In the first round, Germany prevailed against Greece and Sweden against Austria. In the second round, Germany won against Sweden and Greece against Austria.
London 1908
Five teams took part, three British, one Swedish and one from the USA. A team consisted of eight athletes.
Stockholm 1912
A competition with five teams, each against each other, was planned, but only Sweden and Great Britain competed.
Antwerp 1920
The five participants determined the medals in the Bergvall system . After the knockout round for gold, the teams that were eliminated against the eventual winner played a knockout round for silver and then a third knockout round for bronze according to the same scheme.
