Golf at the Olympics

So far, golf has only been part of the program at the Summer Olympics in 1900 and 1904 . At the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016 , competitions in this discipline were held again after a break of 112 years. Golf should also be an Olympic discipline at the 2020 summer games in Tokyo and 2024 in Paris .

Games

Paris 1900

For the 1900 Games in Paris, two golf tournaments were recognized by the IOC as Olympic: one for women and one for men. The Americans Margaret Abbott and Charles Sands were the first Olympic champions. On the 9-hole course of the Société du Sport in Compiègne , a place 80 km north of Paris, the women played one round, the men four. A total of 22 golfers took part, 10 women and 12 men.

St. Louis 1904

In St. Louis 1904, the women's competition was replaced by a team competition. The game was played on an 18-hole course at Glen Echo Country Club . 75 men took part in the individual competition. Gold surprisingly won George Lyon , one of the three participating Canadians. All other participants came from the USA.

Rio de Janeiro 2016

At the 121st IOC meeting in Copenhagen on October 9, 2009, golf was reintroduced into the Olympic program. A tournament was planned for men and women, four rounds of 18 holes were played.
