Modern pentathlon

The modern pentathlon is a multi-discipline sport that on an idea by de Pierre Coubertin rests. He developed the sport based on the Pentathlon at the Olympic Games in antiquity around 1909. The modern pentathlon had its Olympic premiere at the next Games in Stockholm in 1912 .

At Coubertin's request, the military nature of the sport was intended to make officers all over the world aware of the Olympic Games.

Competitions

At the Olympic Games there is a modern pentathlon competition for men and women. Since Sydney 2000 women have started in the sport. The modern pentathlon consists of swimming, epee fencing, show jumping and a combined cross-country run with shooting (as in biathlon). Until 2008, the run and the shooting were held separately.
