Handball was for the first time in 1936 with the XI. Olympic Games in Berlin on the program, as field handball with eleven players on grass. In 1948 in London handball was dropped, in 1952 in Helsinki field handball was a demonstration sport. 1972 Munich Handball came back into the program, but now as a handball and since 1976 in Montreal , a women's tournament will be held.

1936 field handball

At the Olympic Congress in Berlin in May 1930, handball, along with other team sports, was first approved for the 1936 Games, provided that the tournament could be completed within the time allotted for the Games. Six countries took part in the tournament, Germany won gold ahead of Austria and Switzerland. → Berlin 1936

The attempt to permanently include handball in the Olympic program failed in April 1949 at the 44th IOC meeting in Rome. The fact that four countries, Denmark, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden, withdrew in 1936 and indoor handball was becoming increasingly popular, certainly contributed to this. In Helsinki 1952 a demonstration match between Sweden and Denmark took place on July 30th, which Sweden won 19:11. This ended the Olympic appearance of field handball.

Twenty years later handball was again Olympic, this time as indoor handball. In October 1965, at its 64th meeting in Madrid, the IOC made handball an Olympic sport again. Willi Daume , the President of the West German NOK, organized a demonstration game between Spain and Germany for the IOC.

In Munich in 1972 at the 73rd session of the IOC, a women's tournament was included in the program for the following games in 1976 in Montreal. Since then, both tournaments have been an integral part of the Summer Games.
