Polo was first part of the program in 1900 in Paris at the Olympic Games . Up until the 1936 Games , it was part of the program four more times, but from then on it was no longer played. After 1936, against the background of the increasing international austerity policy thatculminatedin World War II , thefinancial and logistical requirements turned out tobe too great, so that the sport of polo lost its popularity and finally fell out of the program.

At the 2018 Summer Youth Games in Buenos Aires , polo was part of the program as a demonstration sport with 28 athletes from twelve nations.
