Charles Edward Sands (born December 22, 1865 in New York City , † August 9, 1945 in Brookville ) was an American golfer , tennis and jeu de paumes player .

education

Charles Sands graduated from Columbia University in 1887 . In 2018 he was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame there.

Athletic career

At the Summer Olympics in Paris in 1900 he competed for the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in golf and won the competition on October 4th after four rounds. For 36 holes he needed 167 strokes. But golf was neither his most successful sport nor his most popular. He mainly played Jeu de Paume, also known as court tennis. He was honored with the Racquette d'Or in 1899, 1900 and again, an award for good tennis players in France. In 1905 he won the American Championship in court tennis. In 1908, when court tennis was the only time Olympic, he took part in the Summer Olympics in London, but was eliminated in the first round. Eight years earlier, Sands took part in tennis competitions, which, unlike court tennis, were played on grass. He was eliminated there in both men's singles and doubles (with Archibald Warden as partner) and in mixed (with Georgina Jones as partner) in the first round. This made him one of only three American athletes to participate in three sports. His only notable performance in a turf tennis tournament was reaching the quarterfinals of the 1894 US National Championships .
