The Artemis Quartet (Vineta Sareika, violin, Suyoen Kim, violin, Gregor Sigl, viola and Harriet Krijgh, violoncello), named after the hunting goddess who leads the bow , is considered to be one of the leading string quartets .

history

The ensemble was founded in Lübeck in 1989 and is based in Berlin . Mentors were Walter Levin , the Alban Berg Quartet , the Juilliard String Quartet and the Emerson String Quartet . The prize of the German Music Competition (1995) as well as first prizes at the ARD Music Competition (1996) and the Premio Paolo Borciani (1997) paved an international career. Today it is a guest at all major international concert series and festivals around the world.

The ensemble's recordings have won several important prizes such as the Diapason d'or , the German Record Critics' Prize and the 1997 Premio Paolo Borciani, most recently with the ECHO Klassik 2006 for the recording of the Beethoven Quartets op. 95 and 59.1 . In 2001 the quartet received the German Critics' Prize and in 2007 the Würth Prize of Jeunesses Musicales Germany . In 2015 the quartet was again awarded the ECHO Klassik in the chamber music recording of the year category. In 2016 the quartet received an ECHO for a Brahms CD.

The first members of the Artemis Quartet were students at the Lübeck University of Music , where the quartet first met for a chamber music course with their later mentor Walter Levin . For family and health reasons, Wilken Ranck left the quartet in 1994, as did Volker Jacobsen and Heime Müller at the end of the 2006/2007 season. Natalia Prishepenko also left the ensemble in 2012. Gregor Sigl (2nd violin), violist Friedemann Weigle (until his death in July 2015) and the Latvian violinist Vineta Sareika (1st violin) became new members. After Friedemann Weigle's death, Anthea Kreston was accepted as the new second violinist in the quartet, while Gregor Sigl switched from second violin to viola.

Since May 2019, the ensemble has been playing half a new line-up. Founding member Eckart Runge and Anthea Kreston left the quartet. He was succeeded by Harriet Krijgh on cello and Suyoen Kim, who shares the roles of 1st and 2nd violins with Vineta Sareika. Gregor Sigl continues to play the viola.

The Artemis Quartet is an honorary member of the Beethoven-Haus Bonn association . For its 20th anniversary, the Artemis Quartet presented a Beethoven cycle in music centers such as Vienna, Berlin, Florence, London, Tokyo and Paris.
