Arditti Quartet

The Arditti Quartet is a string quartet ensemble with a focus on the interpretation of compositions from the 20th century and the present.

history

Since it was founded in 1974 by the violinist Irvine Arditti , several hundred string quartets have been dedicated to the quartet. It gave world premieres of works by composers such as Louis Andriessen , Georges Aperghis , Harrison Birtwistle , Benjamin Britten , John Cage , Elliott Carter , Edisson Denissow , Pascal Dusapin , Brian Ferneyhough , Friedrich Goldmann , Erhard Grosskopf , Sofia Gubaidulina , Toshio Hosokawa , Mauricio Kagel , György Kurtág , Helmut Lachenmann , Bernhard Lang , György Ligeti , Bruno Maderna , Philippe Manoury , Conlon Nancarrow , Wolfgang Rihm , Peter Ruzicka , Giacinto Scelsi , Salvatore Sciarrino , Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis .

The Arditti Quartet always aims to work closely with the composer when interpreting new music . Its members were also permanent lecturers at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music and have since given numerous master classes and workshops for young performers and composers worldwide .

The Arditti Quartet's discography comprises more than 200 CDs. The French label Montaigne Naïve has released 42 recordings that portray numerous contemporary composers. In addition, the first recording of all string quartets of the Second Viennese School was made . Many works were recorded in the presence of the composers, for example the complete string quartets by Luciano Berio . Stockhausen's “Helicopter Quartet” was also recorded by the ensemble. Recent releases on Aeon include music by Harrison Birtwistle , Pascal Dusapin , Gerhard and Harvey.

The Arditti Quartet has received several prizes over the past 25 years, including the German Record Prize several times . For the recording of works by Elliot Carter (1999) and Harrison Birtwistle (2002) it won two Gramophone Awards for “best recording of contemporary music”. In 1999 he was awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize for his "musical life's work". In 2004 the Académie Charles Cros awarded him the “Coup de Cœur” for his “contribution to the spread of the music of our time”.
