Erhard Grosskopf (born March 17, 1934 in Berlin ) is a German composer .

Life

After starting various courses in medicine, mathematics, philosophy, studying church music and composition with Ernst Pepping and Boris Blacher and then teaching at the Berlin Conservatory for two years, Grosskopf has lived as a freelance composer in Berlin since 1966. He received a scholarship from the Villa Massimo Rome in 1966/67 and 1977 and worked repeatedly in the electronic studio for sonology at the University of Utrecht , later also at the ZKM Karlsruhe . In 1972 his electronic music process of change was awarded at the Prix ​​d'Italia . From 1976 to 1979 he was co-editor of the journal for culture and politics in Berlin books , 1978-1998 initiator and artistic director of the concert series island music in Berlin. From 1982 to 1992 he was invited to the international summer courses for new music in Darmstadt as a lecturer.

As early as the 1960s, Grosskopf addressed the dimension of space in music. For example, in 1969 he created an instrumental-electronic 7-channel composition for the German ball pavilion at the Expo '70 in Osaka ( Dialectics ) and in 1971 audio music , the first spatial composition composed for the Berlin Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, about which Heinz -Klaus Metzger said 30 years later in Deutschlandradio Kultur : »The space this score is about is not the space in which it is realized, but rather the space it realizes; namely, it produces him compositionally « .

There was a much discussed performance of his ballet Lichtknall in 1987 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (direction and image Achim Freyer, choreography Lucinda Childs). The world premiere of the symphony Zeit der Windstille followed in 1993 (commissioned by SFB / rbb, ISCM's International Jury Selection for the World Music Days '95) and in 2003, commissioned by MaerzMusik die Pleiades - seven similar pieces for piano and orchestra, and in the same year the orchestral work reflection at rbb , contemporary music.

Erhard Grosskopf has been a member of the Akademie der Künste (Berlin) since 1994 and was vice director there from 2003 to 2008 and then director of the music section until May 2012.
