Peter Schmidl (born January 10, 1941 in Olomouc , Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia ) is an Austrian clarinetist and university teacher. He was a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and an active member of the Vienna Philharmonic from 1968 to 2010 .

Education and artistic career

Peter Schmidl was born into a family of musicians. His father Viktor Schmidl (1899–1941) and his grandfather Alois Schmidl (1862–1946) - who still worked with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra in the time of Gustav Mahler - were the first clarinettists of the Vienna Philharmonic .

At the age of six, Peter Schmidl received his first piano lessons. After passing his high school diploma at the Humanist Gymnasium Rainergasse with distinction, he studied from 1959 to 1964 with Rudolf Jettel , then solo clarinetist of the Vienna Philharmonic , at the Vienna Music Academy . From 1963 to 1965 he studied acting and directing at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna.

On May 1, 1965, he was appointed to the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera , and on September 1, 1968, he was accepted into the Association of the Vienna Philharmonic. From 1968 Peter Schmidl was principal clarinet in the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic. From 2001 to 2005 he was managing director of the Vienna Philharmonic. In 2006 he was appointed doyen of the Vienna State Opera. He retired in October 2010.

In addition to his work as an orchestral musician, Peter Schmidl is an international soloist. Collaborations with conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, Karl Böhm, Riccardo Muti, André Previn, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Nikolaus Harnouncourt, Michael Tilson Thomas, Sándor Végh and Yehudi Menuhin shaped his career. At the invitation of Herbert von Karajan, he performed as principal clarinet in numerous concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic .

Peter Schmidl is a member of several chamber music ensembles , such as the Vienna Octet, the Vienna Ring Ensemble and the Vienna Wind Soloists.

Teaching activity

From 1967 he taught at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (from 1980 extraordinary, from 1985 full professorship, meanwhile retired).

Schmidl has been Artistic Chairman of the Pacific Music Festival Sapporo in Japan since 1999 .

In 2004 he was appointed concert director of the Salzburg Festival (from 2007). Due to differences of opinion with the artistic director Jürgen Flimm , Peter Schmidl did not take up this position.

In the 2004/05 season, Peter Schmidl created and presented the talk show Alles Theater of the Austrian Federal Theaters , where he held talks with the then Austrian State Secretary for Art and Media, Franz Morak , KS Waldemar Kmentt , Christian Thielemann and Rudolf Buchbinder .

Since 2005 he has been co-moderator (with Wilhelm Sinkovicz) of the ORF program Philharmonische Verführung .
