Walter Dobner

Walter Dobner (born January 22, 1952 in Krems ) is an Austrian lawyer , publicist and music critic . From 2013 to August 2019 he was director of the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle .

Life

Dobner attended the Althangasse elementary school in his hometown of Krems from 1958 to 1962 and then the Piaristengasse grammar school from 1962 to 1966 . After graduating from the secondary school in 1971, he studied law and political science at the University of Vienna . In April 1974 Dobner was co-organizer of the international legal history conference in Krems on the subject of "19th century civil legislation in Central and Southeastern Europe". In 1975 he was at the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna to Dr. iur. PhD.

After completing the court practice in Vienna, he was a civil servant in the province of Lower Austria . He led presentations in the district authorities Wiener Neustadt and Neunkirchen . In 1978 he moved to the Lower Austrian provincial government in Vienna. There he was a consultant in the water and traffic law departments and deputy head of the social security departments. In 1990 he became secretary in the administrative court as representative of the state of Lower Austria . From 1996 to 2007 he worked in the Vienna City Administration, since 1999 as Senate Councilor of the City of Vienna . In 1999, Federal President Thomas Klestil awarded him the professional title of Professor .

From 1966 to 2005 he was head of the legal office and from 2005 to 2007 the division manager for special tasks of the Vienna Hospital Association . Dobner was also a lecturer at the Vienna Hospital Association and lecturer in hospital management at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and at the Medical Association for Vienna.

In 2013, Minister of Culture Claudia Schmied appointed Dobner director (executive director) of the Vienna Court Music Band. Jürgen Partaj succeeded him in this role in October 2019.

Since 1979 he has been married to Heidemarie Dobner (* 1956), General Secretary of Globart . The marriage had three children.

Cultural activities

Since 1967 he has worked as a publicist and music critic . At first he wrote for the Lower Austrian News . In 1975 he became a music critic for the daily newspaper Die Presse and a regular author of the Saturday features supplement Spectrum . From 1978 he wrote several art-historical and musical features articles for the Lower Austria Society for Art and Culture . Since 2006 he has been a permanent employee of the weekly newspaper Die Furche . He also writes u. a. for the Austrian music magazine , the Lower Austrian culture magazine tomorrow (until 2008), the theater and culture magazine Die Bühne , the Lower Austrian cultural reports and the magazine of the Friends of the Salzburg Festival . From 1979 to 2011 he was editor-in-chief of Chor aktuell , the publication of the Austrian Singers' Association. The foundation of the monthly magazine of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna (Musikverein) goes back to his initiative. Between 1982 and 1993 he designed programs for Austrian radio ( ORF regional studios Lower Austria and Vienna as well as Austria 1 ) and other radio stations.

Dobner wrote program texts for the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich , the Donaufestival Niederösterreich, the Rachlin Festival Pernegg, the Musikverein für Steiermark , the concerts at Grafenegg Castle (1975-2000), the Zwettl Abbey International Organ Festival (1994-2003), the Mondsee Music Days ( 2007–2009), the Carinthian Summer (1980–2003), the Wiener Konzerthaus , Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien ( Musikverein ), the Vienna Philharmonic (since 1983), the Vienna State Opera (since 1999) and the Salzburg Festival (since 1999) . He has also written booklet texts for records and CDs, among others for Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft , Philips , Decca , Orfeo, Teldec and OehmsClassics .

He was the initiator of the Krems office of the Austrian Musical Youth , which he directed for several years. Dobner was also a member of several juries, including from 1989 to 2006 the Premio internazionale of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena.
