Javier Camarena (born March 26, 1976 in Xalapa , Veracruz ) is a Mexican tenor who appears on important international stages.

Camarena graduated from Guanajuato University. Francisco Araiza is his singing teacher and advisor. In 2004 he made his debut at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City as Tonio in La fille du régiment . There he could also be heard as Belmonte ( The Abduction from the Seraglio ), Nemorino ( L'elisir d'amore ) and Ernesto ( Don Pasquale ) . Javier Camarena has been an ensemble member of the Zurich Opera House since 2007 , where she sang the Almaviva in Paisiello's Il barbiere di Siviglia , and Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia , the Belfiore ( La finta giardiniera ) and in new productions the Lindoro ( L'italiana in Algeri ), Ferrando, Belmonte, Fileno ( La fedeltà premiata ), Osiride ( Mosè in Egitto ), the title role in Le comte Ory , the Nadir ( Les pêcheurs de perles ), the Fenton ( Falstaff ) and the Cassio ( Otello ).

Guest engagements took him to the Paris Opéra , where he appeared as Almaviva, Lindoro, Elvino ( La sonnambula ), Giacomo V ( La donna del lago ) and Ramiro ( La Cenerentola ) , to the Vienna State Opera (Almaviva, Lindoro), the Metropolitan Opera (Almaviva), to Cologne (Lindoro) as well as to Brussels , Düsseldorf and Dresden (Ramiro).

He was heard on the concert podium with leading Mexican orchestras as well as with the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra . With the Orchestra Mozart under Claudio Abbado he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2012 .

In April 2014 he became the third tenor in the history of the Metropolitan Opera to lead an encore when he sang the aria “Si, ritrovarla io giuro” from the opera La Cenerentola . Previously only Luciano Pavarotti had done this in 1994 with Tosca , Juan Diego Flórez in 2008 with La Fille du Regiment and in 2010 with L'elisir d'amore .

In 2016 he was nominated for the International Opera Award as best singer.
