The opera line-ups for the Salzburg Festival from 1922 to 1926 include all opera performances in the founding years of the Salzburg Festival . Franz Schalk , Richard Strauss and Bruno Walter were among the most important conductors of this period .

concept

The Salzburg Festival was founded in 1920 with a play, Hofmannsthal's play about the dying of the rich man, Jedermann , staged by Max Reinhardt . The opera was anchored in all festival concepts as the mainstay of the festival, but only gradually established itself in the Salzburg festival program. The first three years were shaped by three internationally renowned conductors, Richard Strauss and Franz Schalk , who jointly directed the Vienna State Opera from 1919 to 1924 , and from 1925 also by Bruno Walter . The opera program in those years did not yet have an independent profile, at that time the festival was often referred to as the “summer branch of the Vienna State Opera”, because the choir and orchestra, the sets, the singers and conductors came from Vienna. The set designer Alfred Roller played an important role in the festival performances, and he significantly shaped the visual components of the performances.

Mozart was at the beginning of the festival - and at the center. Strauss and Schalk chose the three Da Ponte operas for the opera prelude in Salzburg , which are still very important in Salzburg's repertoire, as well as the Abduction from the Seraglio . This was followed in 1925 by Donizetti with the comic opera Don Pasquale , in 1926 by the Fledermaus by Karl Haffner , Richard Genée (libretto) and Johann Strauss, and for the first time a contemporary opera, Ariadne auf Naxos by Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss , co-founders of the festival. From then on, the opera was firmly established in the festival program.

The occupations were exquisite. Singers from all over Europe formed excellent Mozart ensembles. The Salzburg style means that smaller parts are also cast with high-class singers.
