Live and act

Rose Pauly studied singing with Rosa Papier-Paumgartner in Vienna . In the 1917/1918 season she made her debut with a small role in Flotow's Martha at the Hamburg City Theater, followed by Desdemona at the Vienna State Opera in 1918 . The singer was engaged at the Landestheater in Gera from 1919 to 1921, at the Stadttheater Karlsruhe in the 1921/1922 season , at the Cologne Opera from 1922 to 1926 and at the Mannheim National Theater in the 1926/1927 season . At the opening of the Kroll Opera in Berlin on November 19, 1927, she sang Leonore in a modern production of Fidelio , conducted by Otto Klemperer . There she sang Maria in Ernst Krenek's The Dictator and took part in the world premiere of the opera Neues vom Tage by Paul Hindemith . In 1930 she sang at the Berlin State Opera in the world premiere of Fremde Erde by Karol Rathaus . She was also involved in premieres and world premieres of new opera literature at the Vienna State Opera, for example in 1930 in Alban Berg's Vienna premiere of Wozzeck in the role of Marie and in 1931 in the world premiere of Die Bakchantinnen by Egon Wellesz .

Her international recognition was proven early on by appearances at the Saxon State Opera in Dresden, the Budapest State Opera , and the Grand Opéra in Paris.

Pauly developed a repertoire of enormous breadth - it ranged from Mozart's Donna Anna to highly dramatic roles and classic mezzo roles to operettas . The singer showed a special affinity for Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner : She embodied the title roles in Salome , Elektra and Ägyptischer Helena , as well as first the empress , later the dyer in Frau ohne Schatten . In the Wagner subject she interpreted Senta , Venus , Sieglinde and Kundry , and in Lohengrin first Elsa , later Ortrud . Pauly was also successful in Italian and French operas - she sang Aida , Amelia , Eboli and Lady Macbeth , was an impressive Turandot and a touching girl from the golden west .

The singer made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1922 as Donna Anna , returned in 1933 as a dyer and celebrated a triumphant success as Elektra in 1934 and 1937 . Between 1923 and 1937 Pauly appeared on the stage of the Vienna State Opera at least 132 times, mostly in Wagner and Strauss roles, but also as Carmen , Tosca and Rosalinde in the Fledermaus . Guest tours have taken the artist to Milan, Rome, Naples, London, Odessa, Leningrad, Moscow, Buenos Aires, San Francisco and Chicago.

Even before 1933 Rose Pauly was a victim of anti-Semitic press attacks, for example in 1930 in the " attack ". After Hitler came to power , the artist could no longer perform at the Berlin State Opera and had to leave Germany. She relocated her activities to Graz and Brno , Vienna and Salzburg - until after the annexation of Austria she was no longer allowed to sing in German-speaking countries. In 1937 came the Pauly - in the context of the Americas tour - to New York, where she Rodzinski Artur and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra , the Electra sang in a concert performance. Because of this performance, she was immediately engaged by the Metropolitan Opera . In 1938 she again celebrated triumphs as Elektra at Covent Garden Opera , San Francisco and New York - Ernest Newman found her role design unsurpassable.

“Elektra is a monumental and terrifying work. For me, this great role is the ultimate music-dramatic experience of my career. She devoured me and I was completely captured by the horror and beauty of her fate in every performance. Dissonant? Exhaustive? Yes, but it's a masterpiece with moments of perfection. "

1940 she played in New York's Lewisohn Stadium , the Carmen , 1940 and 1941 she gave recitals in the Town Hall . After a serious fall, she had to end her stage career around 1942. In the mid-1940s Rose Pauly moved with her husband to Palestine and worked as a singing teacher in Jerusalem . The soprano Hilde Zadek was one of her students . Most recently she lived in Herzliya and later in Kfar Schmarjahu near Tel Aviv , where she died in 1975.
