John glasses

John Glasses ( June 12, 1888 in Berlin - May 27, 1968 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ), singing teacher and theater official.

Life

Glasses was already a soloist in the court and cathedral choirs before he began his actual singing studies in Berlin. His stage career began in 1911 at the Ulm City Theater . Then he was at the Hoftheater Altenburg (Thuringia) and in 1912 came to the Wroclaw Opera House . Five years later he went to the Frankfurt Opera House in 1917 , where he stayed until the end of his career. In Frankfurt he sang a. a. on January 21, 1920 at the world premiere of the opera Der Schatzgräber by Franz Schreker the "Elis". Guest performances took him to Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Vienna and the Salzburg Festival in 1926 , where he sang “Bacchus” in Ariadne auf Naxos .

On the occasion of his 25th anniversary in Frankfurt in 1942, he gave his last performance as “Canio” in Bajazzo . Then he continued to work as a singing teacher. From 1961 to 1963 he was also honorary president of the German Theater Members' Cooperative .

Glasses was married to the soprano Agnes Werninghaus (1893–1960).
