Viktor Madin , actually Viktor Madincea , ( December 20, 1876 in Lugoj , Banat , Kingdom of Hungary - March 19, 1968 in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera singer ( baritone ) of Hungarian descent.

Life

Madin was permanently engaged at the Vienna State Opera from 1908 to 1959 , sang more than 250 parts in over 7,000 performances, mainly in small and medium-sized roles, and was finally appointed chamber singer at this house . He is considered to be the singer of the State Opera who performed the highest number of performances of all ensemble members. In Vienna he had particular success as Masetto in Don Giovanni , as Antonio in Le nozze di Figaro and as Faninal in Rosenkavalier . Occasionally he also took on larger roles, including Klingsor in Parsifal , Alberich in the Ring of the Nibelung, or Alfonso in Così fan tutte . In 1955 he received the Great Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria and in 1966 was made an honorary member of the Vienna State Opera.

From 1922 to 1946 he played regularly at the Salzburg Festival . He was involved in the festival's first opera performance - Don Giovanni , conducted by Richard Strauss - on August 14, 1922 as Masetto. During all system changes - from the First Republic to the corporate state and Hitler regime to the Second Republic - he sang Antonio in all Salzburg productions of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro . In Rosenkavalier he sang alternately between 1929 and 1946 as the notary, the marshal's steward, the police commissioner and Mr. von Faninal.
