Georg Maikl (born April 4, 1872 in Hippach near Zell am Ziller , Tyrol , † August 22, 1951 in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera singer. His voice was a lyric tenor .

Life

Georg Maikl came from a family of singers and studied singing with the tenor Anton Hromada in Stuttgart .

After he was discovered by Pollini in 1899, a ten-year engagement at the Hamburg Opera failed because he died shortly afterwards. Instead Maikl sang that same year at the Mannheim Hofbühne, where he made his debut in the role of Tamino.

Gustav Mahler brought Maikl to Vienna in 1904 to the court opera , where he worked for the rest of his life and played a total of 99 roles until 1942. In addition, he was employed at the Salzburg Mozart Festival from 1906 to 1910 and from 1920 at the Salzburg Festival .

Chamber singer Georg Maikl was buried in a grave of honor in Vienna's central cemetery after his death (group 33A / 5/17). In 1959 Maiklgasse in Vienna- Favoriten was named after him.

His daughter was the soprano Liselotte Maikl (1925-2014).

Georg Maikl was primarily a Mozart singer. In addition, he sang almost all parts of the lyrical and performance fields, including the leading roles in La Bohème and La traviata , Don Octavio, Belmonte and Faust. In total, he mastered 99 roles and was seen 3062 times on the Viennese stage. Richard Strauss therefore called him the most dutiful member of the house.
