history

Schkopau Castle around 1860, Alexander Duncker collection

The original building was probably built in the ninth century as a Carolingian fortification and expanded as Scapowe Castle in the twelfth century . The place was first mentioned in 1215 when Emperor Friedrich II donated the imperial castle to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg . In 1444 the hus tu Schapow fell to the Bishop of Merseburg and in 1477 to the von Trotha family . From 1554 to 1558 the southern parts of the castle were converted into a residential palace and the medieval keep with a diameter of 11 meters was integrated into the new building. In 1830 a fire made it necessary to rebuild the north wing. In 1876 the castle was rebuilt in the neo-renaissance style.

When the construction of the Buna works was planned in the 1930s , the locations Döllnitz or Schkopau were available. A member of the von Trotha family, a general, was able to influence the decision in favor of Schkopau in Berlin. This enabled the family to sell their land to IG Farbenindustrie AG and thus financially restructure themselves.

In 1945 the von Trotha family were expropriated as part of the land reform in the Soviet occupation zone.

present

Today the castle is used as a hotel. The keep can be climbed and offers a contrasting overview: In the west chemical park and coal-fired power station , in the north and east the Saale-Elster-Aue with the new Erfurt – Leipzig / Halle line .

The hotel complex has belonged to Sauske Management GmbH since 2007, which also operates it. Kai-U is the sole shareholder and director at the same time. Sauske.
