Gertrud Kappel

Gertrud Kappel , also Gertrude Kappel , ( September 1, 1884 in Halle / Saale - April 3, 1971 in Höllriegelskreuth ) was a German opera singer ( soprano ) who became famous for her Wagner interpretations.

Life

Kappel studied at the Leipzig Conservatory. There she switched from alto to soprano. She made her debut in 1907 as "Leonore" in Fidelio at the Hanover Opera House, where she worked until 1921. From 1921 to 1927 she was in the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera and from 1927 to 1932 at the Munich State Opera. From 1928 to 1936 she was employed at the Metropolitan Opera. In 1937 she ended her career.

On August 14, 1922, the singer interpreted the role of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at the first opera performance of the Salzburg Festival . Richard Strauss conducted it . Between 1920 and 1933 the singer sang at least 57 times in leading roles at the Vienna State Opera . In the 1930s she celebrated successes at the Bayreuth Festival .

Gertrud Kappel mastered almost the entire Wagner subject from Senta to Ortrud and Kundry to Isolde and Sieglinde . Your Strauss interpretations of Elektra and Feldmarschallin were also famous . In the Italian subject she was successful as Aida , Tosca , Amelia , in the German subject as Beethoven's Leonore or d'Alberts Martha .
