Everyone at the Salzburg Festival
The Jedermann performances of the Salzburg Festival on Domplatz since 1920 and their casts reflect the German-speaking theater landscape and film scene precisely. A large number of well-known actors have appeared in the Salzburger Jedermann , often in smaller roles.
Everyone and fanatics
In addition to the Iffland-Ring , the main role in Jedermann is considered the greatest award for an actor in German-speaking countries. It is mostly cast with experienced theater actors who have proven themselves in classic roles. The role of indulgence - with very little text but maximum visibility - has emerged as a barometer for the current female ideal of beauty over the past decades . Popular TV and film stars such as Nadja Tiller , Christiane Hörbiger , Nicole Heesters , Senta Berger , Marthe Keller , Sophie Rois or Veronica Ferres are often chosen .
While in Max Reinhardt's time three Jedermanns faced only two fanatics , in the post-war period the fanatics changed frequently, while the actors of Jedermann played for longer years: Walther Reyer was allowed to embrace six different fanatics in eight seasons. Some Jedermann actors also appeared in smaller roles before or after taking on the main role. The story of Salzburger Jedermann is also a story of breaks and continuities. For example, Paul Hartmann was cast as Guter Gesell in 1927 , in 1928 and 1930 as the voice of the Lord , from 1932 to 1934 he took on the title role, in 1935 he was engaged at Göring's Prussian State Theater in Berlin, from 1942 to 1945 he was President of the Nazi Reichstheaterkammer and in 1963 he was heard again as the voice of the gentleman on the Salzburg Cathedral Square. In the Haeusserman production from 1973 with Curd Jürgens in the leading role, three former Jedermanns played - Walther Reyer the good fellow , Will Quadflieg the death and Ewald Balser the voice of the gentleman . From 1978 to 1982, the former Jedermann Ernst Schröder took on the role of Mammon . Helmut Lohner was the devil for seven years and death for one summer before he was given the lead role in 1990.
Decades later, as everyone's mother , some loyalty returned to Salzburg: Dagny Servaes (1960), Heidemarie Hatheyer (1978 to 1982), Lola Müthel (1995 to 1998) and Elisabeth Trissenaar (2007 to 2009). Another previous indulgence - Sunnyi Melles - embodied faith in 2002 .
Casting of the smaller roles
With almost 2,400 seats and standing room, the Salzburg Domplatz is the largest open-air theater for spoken theater in German-speaking countries. Currently, 13 performances take place every year, mostly sold out. With an annual number of over 30,000 visitors and the attention of the national press, the Salzburger Jedermann is an attractive platform for actors, even for the smaller roles. A performance in Jedermann is also very popular with actors, not least because even the supporting roles are distinctive and enable virtuoso performances. In particular, the devil and death , fat and thin cousins , Mammon , everyone's mother , the good works and faith are very popular.
In 1920 and 1921 Helene Thimig , the future wife of Max Reinhardt , embodied the Guten Werke , from 1928 to 1965 she was seen - with interruptions - as Faith in Salzburg. Sonja Sutter also switched from good works to faith .
The most versatile male performers counts Karl Blühm , in 1949 the devil , between 1950 and 1960, the voice of the Lord , from 1961 to 1965 the Debtor , 1971-1978 the steward , once in 1972 to death and then the servant personified.
The assumption of two roles on the same evening happened occasionally: Werner Krauss played Death and the Devil in 1920 and 1921 , as did Louis Rainer from 1929 to 1934. Between 1920 and 1937, Raul Lange often played the voice of Lord and Mammon on the same evening . In the staging of the play, the good fellow always played the devil , and the voice of the Lord also embodied the poor neighbors . In the Mertes / Crouch production, Dicker and Dünner Vetter also took on the role of game announcer .
Explanations of the tables
In the year of their first appearance in an Everyman role, the names of the actors are colored blue , thus linked. When clicking on the name, the biography of the actor appears. If the name is displayed in red , it means that there is no biography in Wikipedia. - If a field extends over several years, this means that the occupation remained unchanged in the corresponding period. Alexander Moissi played the leading role in 1920 and 1921, and again from 1926 to 1933. - If three roles are noted in the title line, three actors follow in the year column. In 1920 and 1921 Frieda Richard played the mother , Helene Thimig played the good works and Hedwig Bleibtreu played the faith .

1938 to 1945
During the years of National Socialism , the Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels banned the Jedermann performance . A replacement part for the cathedral square was sought, but not found. After the fall of the Nazi regime in May 1945, there was not enough preparation time available to perform Jedermann again on Domplatz at the summer 1945 festival. But as early as 1946, the organizers succeeded in reviving the institution.

1969 to 1972: Leopold Lindtberg's production
At the end of the 1960s, the moralizing aspects of the play - especially the quick forgiveness of the sins of the capitalist bon vivant - no longer seemed appropriate. Voices increased to depose Jedermann at all. The festival's concession to the zeitgeist was a new, purged production by Leopold Lindtberg , which of course did not satisfy the restorative public taste and could only be seen for four summers.

1973 to 1989: Ernst Haeusserman's production
Again in the tradition of Reinhardt's original production, Ernst Haeusserman put Jedermann in his new version from 1973, equipped with lavish costumes by Veniero Colasanti and John Moore . Haeusserman placed high value on prominent casts ( all stars cast ), hired the film and television stars Curd Jürgens , Maximilian Schell and Klaus Maria Brandauer for the title role, Nicole Heesters , Senta Berger and Marthe Keller as a courtship . He also succeeded in engaging four former Jedermanns for supporting roles: Ewald Balser as the voice of the Lord , Will Quadflieg as Death , Walther Reyer as the good fellow and Ernst Schröder as Mammon . The later Jedermann Helmuth Lohner played the devil in Haeusserman's production from 1983 to 1987 and death in 1989 . The other supporting roles were also luxuriously cast - for example Jedermann's mother with Vilma Degischer , Adrienne Gessner , Heidemarie Hatheyer and most recently with Haeuserman's wife Susi Nicoletti , Faith with Agnes Fink , Joana Maria Gorvin and Marianne Nentwich , Death with Klaus-Jürgen Wussow , Rolf Boysen , Romuald Pekny , Michael Degen , Kurt Heintel and Otto Sander , the devil with Martin Benrath , Otto Schenk and Walter Schmidinger .
When it turned out in 1973 that Jürgens' smoky voice was not strong enough for Domplatz, microphone amplification was introduced in the following year , which has since become the standard at Salzburg's Jedermann performances. This innovation, although heavily criticized by parts of the press and the public, has led to a considerable stylistic change: The actors no longer have to call out the text with full vocal power, but can also speak more intimate passages in concert pitch and are still clearly audible from all over the place . It was also now possible to hire more film actors without traditional voice training.
- Leading Team : Veniero Colasanti , John Moore (stage and costumes), William Milié (choreography), Joseph Messner , Einar Nilson (music).
- Music : Salzburg Radio and Mozarteum Choir and Mozarteum Orchestra under the direction of Ernst Hinreiner.
- Other roles : Friedemann Held played the cook from 1973 to 1982, and Robert Werner in 1983
Heribert Aichinger embodied the servant in 1973, Karl Blühm in 1982, and Friedemann Held in 1982
The game announcer was already played by Heinz Ehrenfreund in 1973 (alternating with Michael Heltau).
1990 to 2001: Gernot Friedel's production
Gernot Friedel retained Haeusserman's concept and text in his production. The only new thing on the stage were two recesses for Mammon and Teufel.
- Leading team : Gernot Friedel (director), Imre Vincze (stage), Jorge Jara (costumes 1990–1994), Moidele Bickel (costumes 1995–1998), Annamaria Heinreich (costumes 1995–2001), Elizabeth Clarke (choreography), Gerhard Wimberger (Music 1990–1994), Werner Preisegott Pirchner (music 1995–2001), Rupert Huber (musical direction 1990), Fabrice Bollon (musical direction 1991–1994), Bernhard Sieberer (musical direction 1995–2001)
