Robert Meyer (born October 21, 1953 in Bad Reichenhall ) is a German actor and theater director , member of the Vienna Burgtheater ensemble and director of the Vienna Volksoper since the 2007/08 season .

Life

Robert Meyer was already interested in theater as a child. He and his twin brother repeatedly performed at school events. His brother flirted with a career as an actor, but under pressure from parents chose a non-artistic profession and became a police officer. Meyer prevailed and began his acting studies at the Mozarteum University of Music and Performing Arts in Salzburg . He already played at the Salzburg State Theater during his studies . In 1974 he became a member of the Burgtheater ensemble , where he also represented the ensemble for a while. His first role at the Burgtheater was Schweizererkas in Bertolt Brecht's mother Courage . It was mainly seen in plays by Nestroy , he is considered one of the most famous Nestroy interpreters and director of Nestroy plays. In addition to Nestroy roles, he also played Thersites in Troilus and Cressida , Zettel in A Midsummer Night's Dream , Wurm in Cabal and Love , Dr. Ebenwald in Professor Bernhardi , Dr. Mason in The Wide Land , the Husband in Reigen and Chandebise and Poche in A Flea in the Ear . Between 1988 and 1998 he played and staged at the Summer Festival in Reichenau and took part in the Salzburg Festival as a thin cousin in Jedermann . He worked as a director at the Graz Schauspielhaus and at the Bad Ischl Operetta Festival . Well-known roles of his were at the Volksoper Vienna Sancho Panza in Der Mann von La Mancha , Sigismund in Im Weißen Rößl , Frosch in Die Fledermaus (he has been seen in this role at the Vienna State Opera since 2004 ) and Doolittle in My Fair Lady . He had many solo programs at the Burgtheater, such as B. Travelers , Avoid Bavaria! and Karl Valentin -Evening and Wagner - Parody Tannhäuser in 80 Minuten . Sometimes he also takes on film roles, e.g. B. in Herr Ober and in Die Ameisenstrasse and in the television series Tatort .

From the 2007-2008 season onwards, with the Burgtheater chief planner Rainer Schubert, as director of the Wiener Volksoper, he succeeded its director Rudolf Berger, who left the theater prematurely .
