action

In a mine, three people are stuck in the dark after a breakdown: Jack and Mary, a young couple in love, and old Mr. Bax. A discussion develops between them about whether the youth, who still have their whole life ahead of them, or the old age, who have been on earth for a long time, have the privilege to live and who is more concerned with death.

After an explosion, water suddenly rushes in and the three protagonists become restless. From a distance you can hear the rescue teams singing, but nobody knows whether they will reach the group in time. In the end, the rescuers make it and save Mary and Jack, while old Mr. Bax does not survive.

Characters

Jack is Mary's support, he calms her down and holds her tight. He is a calm and level-headed person. She, on the other hand, is fearful and impulsive. During the conversation, the two come to the conclusion that death is actually a great adventure, although both still have many dreams that can be realized. Old Mr. Bax has been through a lot, he's alive and doesn't just want to give up and die. But in the end it is precisely he who does not draw the conclusions from his point of view and enables Jack the way back to life.

Specialty

Due to the special situation of the protagonists, who are in the dark and can only pick up acoustic signals, they are in a similar situation to the listeners of the drama, who also only rely on language and background noise to understand the play. The men of the rescue team are also only present through their voices and their noises, without an off-voice having to indicate their presence. The author has used the special situation of the people for the special circumstances of the radio play.
