Karl Dönch

Karl Dönch (born January 8, 1915 in Hagen ; † September 16, 1994 in Vienna ) was a German-Austrian opera singer ( bass baritone ) and actor. The Kammersänger sang at the Vienna State Opera from 1947 and at the Salzburg Festival from 1951 . From 1973 to 1987 he was director of the Vienna Volksoper .

Life

Karl Dönch studied at the Dresden Conservatory (music, singing, acting).

In 1936 he got his first engagement in Görlitz, where his debut as Dr. Bartolo in The Barber of Seville . In 1937 he sang the role of Beckmesser for the first time in Richard Wagner's opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in Görlitz , which would later become one of his brilliant roles , with which he was also able to celebrate great international success. After engagements in Reichenberg (1939–1941) and Bonn (1942–1944), he finally found another engagement at the Salzburg State Theater , where he worked from 1945 to 1947 as a singer and head director of the opera. At the same time he was head of an opera class at the Mozarteum from 1945 to 1947 .

In 1946 he had the first time at the Salzburg Festival, as thin cousin in every one of Hugo von Hofmannsthal . In 1947 he began working at the Vienna State Opera. For more than 20 years he took turns at the Salzburg and Bregenz Festival .

From 1981 until his death Dönch was married to the opera and operetta singer Sonja Mottl . Dönch is buried in an honorary grave of the City of Vienna in the Vienna Central Cemetery in Group 40.
