Franz Höbling (born September 9, 1886 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ; † February 14, 1965 in Vienna, Austria ) was an Austrian opera singer (bass), theater and silent film actor.

Life

The son of a post office clerk initially also worked in his father's profession. He made his first attempts at acting in Znojmo at the age of 17 . From 1904 to 1906 he completed his training at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. He then went to the Neue Schauspielhaus (Berlin-Schöneberg) , in 1910 to the Theater in der Josefstadt and from 1911 was a member of the Vienna Burgtheater for over 50 years (until his death) . He was awarded the title of court actor.

Höbling was an actor of youthful heroes, lovers and complex characters, in his repertoire were Karl Moor , Holofernes , Egmont , Orest , Don Juan , Iago and Mephisto . He also sang several opera roles at the State and Volksoper in Vienna. His film career only lasted from 1915 to 1923, with the silent film diva Magda Sonja often being his film partner.

Höbling was also active as a poet and worked for the New Vienna Journal .

His honorary grave is located in the Ottakringer Friedhof (group J, number 57) in Vienna.
