Magda Sonja , actually Venceslava Vesely (born May 23, 1886 in Hradisko , Austria-Hungary ; † August 15, 1974 in Los Angeles , USA ), was an Austrian actress who was one of the divas of Austrian silent film in the 1920s .

Life

Magda Sonja began her acting career at the age of almost 20 at the Theater an der Wien . Afterwards she worked as a diseuse in various Viennese cabarets . She came to silent film in 1917. As early as 1918, she became the star of the emerging Austrian silent film at Wiener Sascha-Film - as a counterpart to the film star of the Viennese art film , Liane Haid . In those years which were the most productive in Austrian film history with over 100 films a year , she was the most popular actress at Sascha-Film. She played in “The Other I” (1918), “Um ein Weib” (1918) and “Don Juan's Last Adventure” (1918). In the 1920s she played the main roles in “Die Venus” (1922), “The Birth of the Antichrist” (1922), “Drakula halala” (1923) and “Ssanin” (1924) and thus advanced to become the Austrian silent film diva. Then she shot a few films in Germany with her husband, the director Friedrich Fehér . She reached the peak of her career in 1927 with " Mata Hari , the red dancer" and "Maria Stuart". With the rise of talkies , her career quickly waned. In 1933 she emigrated with her husband to England, where she was unable to continue her successes from the silent film era.

Her marriage to Friedrich Fehér had a son, Hans Feher , with whom she followed her husband, who emigrated to the USA in 1936, the following year.
