history
Old Ottakring cemeteries
A cemetery in the Ottakring area was first mentioned in a document in 1230. The cemetery already existed at the current cemetery location at that time, extending roughly to the location of today's laying out hall 1, where the parish church of St. Lambert was located. In the Middle Ages and early modern times, epidemic victims were also buried in the Ottakring cemetery. After the capacities for epidemic victims were exhausted in 1713, a separate epidemic cemetery was set up in the area between the current streets of Gaullachergasse and Friedmanngasse. The cemetery was then given to the community of Neulerchenfeld , which enlarged the cemetery to Kirchstetterngasse. The abandonment of the former epidemic cemetery was ordered in 1799, although the cemetery was not finally closed until 1842. As a replacement, the municipality of Neulerchenfeld acquired a piece of land on the Schmelz in 1832 , which was next to the Schmelzer cemetery . The new cemetery was consecrated on September 9, 1832 by Klosterneuburg provost Jakob Rukenstock as the Neulerchenfeld cemetery and remained in operation until 1888. The Neulerchenfeld cemetery was closed due to the merger of Ottakring and Neulerchenfeld to form a district of Vienna, subsequently the Ottakring cemetery served as a burial place for the entire district.
Ottakring cemetery
For a long time, burials took place in the Ottakringer Friedhof free of charge or for a small fee. However, due to overcrowding and frequent extensions, the fees were increased and the burial of non-residents was prohibited in 1874. Due to the strong growth of Ottakring, the Ottakring cemetery was expanded fifteen times from 1835. In addition, ongoing investments in the infrastructure were necessary. In 1863 the application was made for a morgue with an apartment for the grave digger, and in 1879 the municipality approved the fencing of the previously open cemetery area. A chapel was built in 1885, and in 1903 the municipal council decided to purchase land for the construction of an administration building, a sanctuary and a mortuary. The gate system of today's main portal dates from 1935. The laying out hall 2 was rebuilt from 1969 to 1985 by the architect Erich Boltenstern and adapted for use at burials and cremation celebrations. At the same time the ceremonial room of the funeral hall 1 was redesigned, the altar cross was created by the painter Hermann Bauch .
The funeral of the popular workers' leader Franz Schuhmeier at the Ottakringer Friedhof on February 16, 1913 was Vienna's largest demonstration to date. There were - the information varies - up to half a million mourners. The graves of many victims of the February fights of 1934 are also located here . The cemetery is characterized by long avenues with dark, tall steles belonging to the wealthy traders from Alt-Ottakring.
