Herbert Link (born July 29, 1944 in Vienna ; † June 6, 2018 ) was an Austrian filmmaker and media educator .

Life

Herbert Link spent his childhood in the 15th district of Vienna, where he made his first films at the age of 15. At the age of 18 he entered the film business as a cameraman . From 1962 he worked as a camera assistant in an advertising and animated film production, soon he took over the conception and design of non-fictional animated films.

From 1967 Link worked mainly as a freelance cameraman, editor and film designer in the areas of documentary, industrial film and advertising. Between 1969 and 1986 he worked on around 150 educational and school television films and commercials. At that time he became increasingly involved in freely produced film projects and media education. From 1985 he worked as a writer and director, and since 1989 he has mainly produced his own documentary film concepts.

In addition to his film work, Herbert Link was a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1989 to 2006 . He has implemented numerous practical film and video projects with students from the institute for artistic teaching, and has led media workshops and teacher training seminars. Link also oversaw a number of media projects in schools. Numerous documentaries have also been made from these student-professional projects.

He was buried at the Ottakringer Friedhof .

Herbert Link's films are characterized by a very careful and respectful approach to mostly very difficult topics. Link managed to create a very personal atmosphere and to give space and recognition to the experiences, experiences and thoughts of his interview partners in the film. He was supported in many projects by his wife Inge Link, who underlines the atmosphere of the films in the editing and musical design.

Due to personal experience, Herbert Link dealt very intensively in his work with the topics of death, mourning, hospice work and care. The subject of death was also one of the points of connection with the painter Herwig Zens , through whom Link has made numerous films. Between 1982 and 2012, 21 films by, about and with Herwig Zens were made.

Herbert Link is a passionate collector who is aware of the value of seemingly everyday things. With this in mind, he has been documenting his family's Christmas celebrations year after year since 1962 and leaving the videos to the Austrian media library . Over the years, an impressive cultural and historical testimony has emerged.
