Hildegard Teuschl

Hildegard Teuschl (born September 3, 1937 in Vienna as Waldtraud Maria Teuschl ; † February 18, 2009 ibid) was an Austrian social reformer and the founder of the hospice movement in Austria.

Life

After a teaching degree (French and Life Economics) at the University of Vienna and the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon Teuschl entered the sisterhood Caritas Socialis one, one of Hildegard Burjan founded religious community with several branches in German-speaking, and took the religious name of Sister Hildegard of . Having long been interested in social issues, she founded - supported by her order - in 1966 in Vienna the “Caritas School for Social Professions” (today: “Caritas Training Center for Social Professions of the Archdiocese of Vienna ”). She headed the facility, which is attended by several hundred young people today, until 1998.

In the 1980s, Sr. Hildegard began to set up the Austrian hospice movement for practical and pastoral care for the dying . Through the suffering and death of her brother Wolfgang Teuschl , she gained her own experience in palliative care .

At the end of the 1990s, through conferences and courses that took place in the Lainzer Bildungshaus ( Cardinal König Haus ) , among others, she succeeded in raising the awareness of medical pain treatment among the medical profession and thus placing palliative medicine on a broader footing in Austria. From 1993 to 2008 she was president and board member of the umbrella organization Hospiz Austria . In 2006 the former governor Waltraud Klasnic took over the management of the umbrella organization.

Hildegard Teuschl was also instrumental in ensuring that educational measures on hospice and palliative care were implemented. The university course in Palliative Care, which is organized by the three organizations Dachverband Hospiz Österreich, Bildungshaus St. Virgil Salzburg and Paracelsus Medical Private University Salzburg, awards the Hildegard Teuschl Prize at regular intervals, which honors scientific projects in palliative care.

Hildegard Teuschl fell ill with cancer in 2007 and died in "her" hospice on Rennweg in Vienna in 2009 . She was buried at the Kalksburger Friedhof in Vienna. In 2014 the Hildegard-Teuschl-Weg in Vienna- Hietzing - directly behind the Cardinal König Haus - was named after her.
