Caritas Socialis (CS) is a women's order .

Today the sister community runs nursing and care facilities for chronically ill, very old and terminally ill people as well as kindergartens, a dormitory for mothers and children and a social assistance and counseling service. The CS is best known for the CS Hospiz Rennweg and the specialization in the care of people with dementia and people with multiple sclerosis.

history

The community was founded on October 4, 1919 by Hildegard Burjan with the support of Prelate Ignaz Seipel in Vienna as a spiritual community of sisters with the aim of alleviating social hardship. This emerged from the "Social Aid" association established in 1918. The community was canonically established on June 10, 1936 and received papal recognition on February 2, 1960. Tackling the needs of the times at the root, combined with the courage to try something new - that is what Hildegard Burjan was all about, that is what Caritas Socialis is still about today. What is meant is: structural help and not just acute help. In order to secure the long-term existence of the institutions independently of the sister community, a non-profit private foundation was established with foresight: In 2002 the sister community established the Caritas Socialis non-profit private foundation and brought in the institutions. The facilities are now divided into facilities that are organized in GmbHs, all of which were incorporated into the Caritas Socialis non-profit private foundation on January 1, 2002.

The sole purpose of the private foundation is to support and ensure the long-term continued existence of Caritas Socialis facilities: for example the CS Hospiz Rennweg, the CS care centers, the multiple sclerosis and dementia care facilities (day centers, inpatient facilities), the CS residential home for mothers and child, kindergartens as well as developing new projects.

Spiritual sisters and secular employees, some of them volunteer, work in the CS Caritas Socialis. In part, the hospice support for people with dementia and the work of the CS Hospiz Rennweg are made possible by donors. Hildegard Burjan was beatified on January 29, 2012 in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna .

In 2019 Caritas Socialis celebrates its 100th anniversary. The motto of the anniversary year “100 years of CS” Menschen.leben.starkken expresses the concern of Caritas Socialis to meet and strengthen people in their vulnerability.

CS sister community

Today CS sisters live and work in Austria , Germany , South Tyrol , Hungary and Brazil . Some sisters wear a dark blue dress and a white cross on a blue background with the letters “CS” as a badge. The extraordinary general assembly in 1971 reflected on Hildegard Burjan's idea not to introduce any religious clothing. Elderly sisters who had been wearing the blue religious dress for a long time were given the option to wear civil or religious clothes. Newly joining sisters receive a cross with the letters CS as a common symbol when they are accepted into the second probationary period.

After the foundation, the care for the elderly, the protection of girls, the reconstruction of the station mission and the care for those at risk were in the foreground. At the "St. Elisabeth table" people received warm meals, the "sick bed" brought food into the house for sick people and single people. The focus was on family and elderly care, hospice work , youth work, life and social counseling, protection for unborn life and support for single mothers. Sr. Hildegard Teuschl CS directed the Caritas educational institution for social professions in Vienna until 1998. Then she devoted herself to the development and expansion of the hospice movement in Austria and was the first president of the umbrella organization Hospice Austria.

On June 21, 1998, Pope John Paul II visited the Rennweg hospice of the CS ( 3rd district of Vienna ) and gave a speech to all who live and work in the world of disease and suffering .

activities

In the 21st century, the community of sisters concentrates its help at the beginning and end of life with special facilities for children and single mothers as well as for people with Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis and for people with incurable cancer. The community of sisters played a decisive role in spreading the concept of hospice and palliative care in Austria in the 1980s. Dealing with spirituality and value management is also a concern of the CS sisters.

All facilities are run by a non-profit private foundation in which around 850 employees, 580 volunteers, 450 interns and 80 help (as of 2018).

Specializations

Alzheimer's and dementia care

Multiple Sclerosis Care

The multiple sclerosis day center and the neurological long-term ward are part of CS Rennweg. The MS day center is unique in Europe and offers opportunities to combine therapy and community experience during the day. The long-term neurological ward and the care at home work closely with the day center and thus create an optimal transfer between the various members of the CS care network.

Hospice culture and maeutics

The most famous Caritas Socialis facility is the CS Hospiz Rennweg. A palliative ward , the mobile palliative team, the volunteer hospice team, a counseling center and Der Rote Anker are all managed under one roof .
