CS Hospiz Rennweg is a palliative care facility in the third district of Vienna, Landstrasse . In line with the hospice idea, it cares for seriously ill and dying people and their relatives. Caritas Socialis is responsible for the institution .

history

The beginning of the hospice movement in Austria is linked to the Caritas Socialis sister community . The first courses for terminal care for family and elderly helpers by Sr. Mag. Hildegard Teuschl CS pioneered the way in the late 1970s . In the 1980s, an interdisciplinary volunteer group pursued the plan to set up an outpatient and an inpatient hospice . There were no financial resources or awareness of inpatient hospice facilities. In a step-by-step plan it was decided to first build a mobile hospice, at the same time to raise public awareness and finally the plan to open a stationary hospice.

  • In 1987, one year after it was founded in Germany, the Austrian section of the International Society for Dying and Life Support (IGSL) was founded. Working groups were established in the constituent meeting. One working group consisted of the group that had already been founded with the working title CS Hospiz Rennweg. Today's hospice initiatives in Austria are largely based on the work of this group.
  • In 1989 the organization created a working paper that assesses the need for hospice care and creates a concept of how hospice care in Vienna can be imagined. With this concept, the Fürst-Liechtenstein-Preis was submitted in 1989. Sr. Mag. Hildegard Teuschl CS, Sr. Blandina Wenighofer CS and Eduard Spörk (former managing director CS) accepted the award in Liechtenstein.
  • In 1989 the first mobile hospice in Vienna was founded: the premises are provided by Caritas Socialis. The first employees were paid with the prize money of the Prince Liechtenstein Prize. The mobile hospice will be continued by Caritas of the Archdiocese after a joint tour, during which Caritas Socialis is trying to set up the first stationary hospice in Vienna. At the same time as the establishment of the first mobile hospice in Vienna, public relations work began. The campaigns of the CS Hospiz Rennweg have been decisive in raising awareness of the hospice idea since the early 1990s. The campaigns have been awarded national and international prizes since 2000.
  • In 1995 the inpatient hospice of Caritas Socialis was opened in the CS care and social center Rennweg in the 3rd district of Vienna.
  • On June 21, 1998, Pope John Paul II visited the Rennweg hospice of the CS ( 3rd district of Vienna ) and gave a speech to all who live and work in the world of disease and suffering .
  • Since 2002 the organization has been run in cooperation with the Hospital of the Sisters of Mercy in Vienna. This brings financial relief for the patient. The stationary hospice will be converted into a palliative care ward.
  • The advice center was founded in 2008/2009. The volunteer hospice team was also founded that year.
  • 2009 Foundation of the facility "The Red Anchor - Children and Young People Meet Death"

Since 2009 the organization has been running five facilities under one roof: Advice center, palliative care station, mobile palliative care team, volunteer hospice team and Der Rote Anker.

In 2011, a total of 197 seriously ill people were cared for in the palliative care ward (12 beds) and 817 at home with the Rennweg mobile palliative care team at the CS Hospiz Rennweg. In addition, 228 seriously ill and 285 relatives were cared for by the volunteer hospice team. The counseling center held 3,244 counseling sessions. The 60-person hospice team of volunteers has accompanied people in difficult life situations for 6,474.3 hours.
