Claire Born (born February 17, 1898 in Bayreuth , † December 18, 1965 in Vienna ) was a German opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Born received her training in Chemnitz and Vienna. She began her artistic career in 1917 at the Chemnitz Theater , where she worked until 1920. From 1920 to 1929 she was a member of the Vienna State Opera . She was particularly successful with parts from the lyrical and dramatic field , such as the Countess in Figaro's Wedding , Pamina in the Magic Flute , Agathe in Freischütz , Gutrune in Götterdämmerung and Rosalinde in Fledermaus .

She gave guest performances in Amsterdam in 1924 in the title role of Ariadne auf Naxos and in Paris in 1928 as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni . In 1925 she sang Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Gutrune in Götterdämmerung at the Bayreuth Festival .

At the Salzburg Festival , she played the Countess in Figaro's Wedding (1922, 1925, 1927 , 1929), Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni (1922, 1925, 1927) and Ariadne in Ariadne auf Naxos (1926).

From 1926 to 1932 she was a member of the Dresden State Opera . At the world premiere of the opera Cardillac she took on the role of daughter here on November 9, 1926, and Ilsebill at the world premiere of Othmar Schoeck's opera Vom Fischer un syner Fru on October 3, 1930. In 1924 she made a guest appearance at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and in 1935 at the Stadttheater Graz .

Her roles were Dorabella in Così fan tutte , Irene in Rienzi , Minneleide in Die Rose vom Liebesgarten , Duchess of Parma in Doctor Faust , Nedda in Bajazzo , Maddalena in Andrea Chénier and Suzel in Mascagni's Amico Fritz .

Born, who was married to the banker Richard Kronstein, had to because of their Jewish origin after the seizure of power left in 1933 Nazi Germany. After Austria's annexation in 1938, she first went to Switzerland and then to London , where she worked as a singing teacher. After the end of the war, she returned to Vienna, where she worked as a singing teacher from 1946 to 1948.
