Franz de Rainville , also Francisco de Rainville (born April 21, 1869 in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim , Espírito Santo , Brazil , † December 7, 1933 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a German lieutenant colonel .

Life

In 1889, after graduating from high school, Rainville entered the infantry regiment "Kaiser Wilhelm" (2nd Grand Ducal Hessian) No. 116 as an avantageur . Here he became second lieutenant in 1891 and first lieutenant in 1899 . Because of his linguistic talent he laid the examination to Italian - Interpreting the title "particularly suitable" and was only teacher at Military cadet Wahlstatt and later at the main military academy . In 1906 he became a captain and in 1911 company commander in the infantry regiment "Bremen" (1st Hanseatic) No. 75 , before joining the 9th company of the infantry regiment "Lübeck" (3rd Hanseatic) No. 162 in the same capacity newly created garrison Eutin was transferred.

In the First World War he proved himself before Noyon and was promoted to major in November 1914 and commander of the III. Battalion appointed. In 1917 he was transferred as battalion commander to the newly established Infantry Regiment No. 463 of the 238th Division before he was appointed commander of the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Grenadier Regiment No. 89 on March 2, 1918 . He led this regiment from March 21, 1918 in the Great Battle of France and during the initial successes of the German troops was able to bring in 650 prisoners as well as 32 artillery pieces, twelve heavy and 25 light machine guns , two heavy mine throwers and a lot of other things besides two gas cannon batteries Loot material. After the end of the offensive, Rainville and his troops were pulled from the front for a period of rest and training. In order to keep his regiment on the Champagne Front from September 29 to October 17, 1918, de Rainville was telegraphed to the Order Pour le Mérite from Army High Command 1 . Wilhelm II awarded him this prestigious honor on November 6, 1918. The defensive battles of his regiment near St. Fergeux for possession of the Signalberg from October 29th to November 1st were mentioned in the army report.

With the armistice , the regiment went home and temporarily resigned from the division on November 29 at Rothenbach . The regiment was formed into a battalion on December 31, 1918. It was obligated to homeland security in Mecklenburg and Berlin and was transported to Treuenbrietzen the next day . On the 12th it marched to the imperial capital and, when it arrived on the 15th, occupied the town hall , the district court , the school in Boddinstrasse and the Kindl brewery in Neukölln . Major von Brockhusen took over the leadership of the regiment for the sick commander and protected the election to the German National Assembly on January 19, 1919.

On February 4, Rainville returned to Eutin for his final peacekeeping operation. In November 1919, with the approval of his resignation letter, he was given the character of a lieutenant colonel with a statutory pension .

Rainville returned to his Brazilian homeland. There he headed the local chapter of the steel helmet in Rio de Janeiro, the then capital of Brazil. Here he died after a long and serious illness.

On the 25th anniversary of the Eutin garrison, Udo, son of the war battalion commander, who has since died, gave the barracks there the name of the regiment's war commander.
