The Wallburg near Müngsten is a defunct rampart ( Höhenburg ) near Müngsten in the Remscheid district of Reinshagen ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

location

The ring wall system is located at 207  m above sea level. NN in a forest area called Schimmelbusch near Müngsten , on the southern slope of the Morsbachtal , above the mouth of the Morsbach in the Wupper . Not far from the height of the ridge, the Wallburg stretches out as an uneven square with straight edges. The sides measure approximately 131, 86, 117 and 48 meters. The circumferential, three-meter-wide wall has a height of 2 to 2.5 meters on the outside and 0.5 to 0.75 meters on the inside. In front of the wall there is a sanded pointed ditch . Probably the only access to the complex, about four meters wide, was on the western corner; an old serpentine path leading there was barely recognizable at the end of the 19th century.

The facility is located in the Wupper and Wupperhang nature reserve south of Müngsten and, along with the Ehrenhain and the Müngsten Bridge, is of particular cultural and historical importance.

history

Opinions differ about the dating and the builders of the complex. A Germanic , Celtic , Roman or medieval origin was discussed. A recent development as 47.75 acres of acorn seeding area by a Gerdard Heuschler from Morsbach was also put up for discussion by local researcher Gustav Hermann Halbach . An archaeological investigation is still pending.

The Wallburg has been registered as the Güldenwerth ramparts since March 23, 1990 in the list of soil monuments (No. 2) of the city of Remscheid.
