Gustav Hermann Halbach

Gustav Hermann Halbach (born December 11, 1882 in Remscheid ; † March 18, 1958 there ) was a German homeland and linguist .

Life

Halbach initially worked as a businessman. During the First World War, he was taken prisoner by Russia in 1915, from which he was released in 1918. In 1919 he worked as an editor for the Deutsche-Metall-Industrie-Zeitung in Remscheid, later he worked in the Remscheid city library . Most recently he worked as a dialect researcher and freelance writer, he published stories and poems in his familiar dialect , the Remscheider Platt, in local newspapers.

His most important and also newly published work is the Bergische Sprachschatz , a dictionary of the Remscheid dialect, which compares dialect terms with the corresponding High German words and appeared for the first time in 1951. The counterpart to this, the Bergische Sprachschatz, Part II , which contrasts the High German words with the corresponding dialect terms, was published by Siegfried Horstmann in 1983. Halbach also wrote for the Rheinisch-Westfälische Zeitschrift für Volkskunde , so 1958 Bergische placenames in the Remscheid dialect and published articles for the Bergisches Geschichtsverein , including in its magazine Romerike Berge . His estate is in the Remscheid City Archives . In Remscheid the Gustav-Hermann-Halbach-Straße near the central point was named after him.
