Erik Wirl

Erik Wirl (born May 30, 1884 in Ebensee ; † February 15, 1954 in Rottach-Egern ) was a German opera singer (tenor) and actor .

Life

In Munich Wirl had his voice trained by the court and chamber singer Eduard F. Schuegraf. Initially classified as a baritone, he then switched to tenor. He made his debut in the role of the young sailor in Tristan und Isolde by Richard Wagner . As a tenor opera singer, he has worked in Bayreuth, Berlin, Budapest, Buenos Aires, The Hague, Frankfurt / Main, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, Paris, Salzburg and Vienna.

Wirl also sang operettas and entertainment songs - often in duets with well-known colleagues of his time. Also the hits of the still young sound film the Wienerlied Ja there in Liebhardstal and the title hit Wien, du Stadt der Lieder by Hans May .

In his work, special emphasis was placed on the works of Franz Schreker . Wirl sang the role of Chevalier at the world premiere of his operas Der ferne Klang on August 18, 1912 and Menaldo Negroni in Die Gezeichen on April 25, 1918 and designed the figure of the fool in The Treasure Grave . He sang in Ferruccio Busoni's opera Turandot in 1918 under Gustav Brecher in Frankfurt / Main alongside Else Gentner-Fischer and Hans Ertl. At the world premiere of Frederick Delius ' opera in 11 pictures Fennimore and Gerda he sang in 1919 alongside John glasses, Emma Holt and Elisabeth Kandt.

Examples of his appearance in modern operettas are Madame Pompadour by Leo Fall , where he sang René, Comte D'estrades, and Münchhausen von Ernst in the premiere on September 9, 1922 under the baton of the composer - alongside Fritzi Massary in the title role Steffan, where it premiered on December 23, 1927 alongside Hella Kürthy, Rose Ader and Fritz Schulz .

At the end of the 1920s, he also made a name for himself through his participation in performances of contemporary musical avant-garde such as Paul Hindemith's "funny opera in three parts" Neues vom Tage and the Lindberghflug by Bertolt Brecht with the music of Paul Hindemith and Kurt Weill . He appeared on the stage as well as on the radio and in the record studio.

He also appeared in Ernst Křenek's modern operas . After he had already sung the blind officer and lover in the “Tragic Opera in One Act” (as the preface) Der Dictator op. 49 in the performance of Křenek's one-act trilogy in the Kroll Opera , he gave in the performance of Křenek's opera Leben des Orestes op. 60 on March 8, 1930 in the Berlin State Opera under Otto Klemperer conducted the Agamemnon.

  1. ^ The baritone Eduard Schuegraf (* December 6, 1851 Munich, † December 14, 1928 Munich) worked there as a concert singer after his training in Munich. After further studies he was engaged at the Munich court opera in 1882/83. He also sang at the theater in Nuremberg, where he gave a recital on May 3, 1888, when he left.
