Dolly Haas (real name: Dorothy Clara Louise Haas ; born April 29, 1910 in Hamburg ; died September 16, 1994 in New York City ) was a German - American actress who worked for theater, cabaret and film.

life and work

Dolly Haas' parents were Charles Oswald Haas from Britain and Margarete Hansen from Vienna. She had been taking ballet lessons since she was six. After graduating from school, she performed at various stage events in Berlin.

Her talent as a dancer, singer and actress was quickly recognized. She was involved in many revues and before 1936 in 16 German films in which the petite actress can often be seen in trouser roles : So she goes to the army in lieu of her brother and, as the page from the Dalmass Hotel , puts an end to cheats.

After the handover of power to the National Socialists , Haas had to emigrate from Germany in 1936 and continued to work in Great Britain . In 1938 she moved to America and became a US citizen in 1940. Since there were no film offers, she played successfully theater on Broadway . Alfred Hitchcock cast them in his 1953 thriller I confess as the wife of OE Hasse .

Dolly Haas was first married to Hans (John) Brahm and from 1943 until her death to the cartoonist Al Hirschfeld , with whom she had a daughter (born 1945).
