Johann Sioly

Johann Sioly (born March 26, 1843 in Vienna ; † April 8, 1911 there ) was an Austrian folk singer and composer of Viennese songs .

Sioly studied violin from 1853 to 1859 and from 1861 was a piano player and composer in various Viennese folk singing societies. Influenced by the Viennese mentality, Sioly began writing and composing Viennese songs at an early age. Sioly, who is critical of politics, created over a thousand songs that were included in the Heurigen canon (for example: Goethe didn't write that ). From 1869 to 1873 he accompanied the well-known folk singer Antonie Mansfeld , with whom he also had a love affair. Before the planned wedding, however, she fell into mental confusion and died in the madhouse. He also worked closely with the folk song singer Edmund Guschelbauer (1839-1912) and the folk singer and playwright Wilhelm Wiesberg (1850-1896). Although his melodies became very successful, he earned almost nothing from them and died impoverished.

He rests in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (76A-3-44). In 1963 Siolygasse in Vienna- Döbling was named after him.
