Alfred Jerger
Alfred Jerger (born June 9, 1889 in Brno , † November 18, 1976 in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera singer ( bass baritone ).
Life
He studied at the Music Academy in Vienna and in 1913 became the operetta conductor at the Stadttheater Passau . His next stop was Winterthur and in 1915 he came to Zurich .
In Zurich he was discovered as a singer. He made his debut here as a bass baritone in 1917. In 1919 he came to the Munich State Opera through the mediation of Richard Strauss . In 1921 he became a member of the Vienna State Opera , where he worked until 1953. Jerger worked here not only as a singer, but also as an opera director. He also dealt with the revision of libretti . Among other things, he wrote a revision of the bat and the Don Pasquale .
On July 1, 1933, he sang Mandryka in the world premiere of Richard Strauss' Arabella at the Semperoper . From 1922 to 1959 Jerger often took part in the Salzburg Festival , including in 1938 the Sixtus Beckmesser in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg under Wilhelm Furtwängler . In the film Immortal Melodies (1936) he took on the leading role of the waltz king Johann Strauss , but since Jerger also offered vocal interludes, the film was not considered appropriate. In 1945 the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera made him provisional artistic director. In 1947 he took over a professorship at the Vienna Music Academy. On June 8, 1959 he was awarded the Medal of Honor by the federal capital Vienna .
He went on numerous tours and made many recordings. In 1969, at the age of 80, he took part in a recording of Der Rosenkavalier in the role of notary.
His honorary grave is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 40, number 46).
