Jan Lauwers (* 1957 in Antwerp ) is a Belgian theater director .

life and work

Jan Lauwers studied painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) . In 1979 he founded the Epigonenensemble , which in 1981 transformed into the collective Epigonentheater zlv (zlv: Dutch abbreviation of zonder leiding van / without the management of ). In 1986 Jan Lauwers founded the Needcompany with the choreographer Grace Ellen Barkey in Brussels . Jan Lauwers is the director and artistic director of the Needcompany, an international collective of idiosyncratic theater makers and performers . Each production is performed in different languages. The Needcompany's first production took place in 1987 in the legendary Mickery Theater , Amsterdam.

Jan Lauwers is regarded as the director of post-dramatic theater . In 2012 he was awarded the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria and in 2014 in the theater program of the Venice Biennale with the Golden Lion for his life's work. In 2018 Jan Lauwers directed the opera L'incoronazione di Poppea , which was shown at the Salzburg Festival in the Großes Festspielhaus .
